The Upper Room Bible Church
A church isn't a set of ideas, it's people in relationships to God and to each other. Nonetheless, the ideas we believe are extremely important - they influence every part of our lives. We want our beliefs to line up with what the Bible teaches. For anyone who wants to know more about what our church believes, we've listed our Purpose Statement and our Statement of Faith here.
Our Purpose
The purpose of this church shall be to make disciples of Jesus Christ through evangelism, Bible teaching, prayer, worship, fellowship, music, and missions, by any appropriate method. This shall include both evangelism (bringing people to Christ) and discipleship (bringing Christians to maturity) through the authority of God the Father, the provision of the shed blood of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Statement
of Faith
We Believe:
The Scriptures,
both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without
error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will
for the salvation of men, and the Divine and final authority for all
matters to which it addresses itself. Psalm 119; Luke 24:27, 44-45;
II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21
In one God,
Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in
three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:1; Exodus
20:3; Deuteronomy 6:4, 33:27; Isaiah 57:15; Matthew 28:19
That Jesus Christ
is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Ghost
and born of the Virgin Mary. He arose bodily from the dead,
ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on
High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate. Luke 1:26-35,
22:69-70, 24:1ff; Acts 1:1-11; John 1:1, 14; Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews
4:14-15
That the ministry
of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, as Christ
prophesied, to convict men, regenerate the believing sinner, indwell
guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and
service. John 16:7-14; Romans 8:9-11; Ephesians 3:16
That man’s
state by creation was innocence; that by free choice he transgressed
the known will of God, and became by nature and choice a sinner, and
thereby incurred physical and spiritual death; that he is utterly
unable to do anything to merit God’s favor. Genesis 3:1ff;
Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:8-9
That the shed
blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground
for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such
as receive Jesus Christ are born of His Holy Spirit, and thus become
children of God. John 1:12, 3:5, 6, 16; Romans 3:24-25, I
Corinthians 15:12-19
That water baptism
and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances to be observed by the
church during the present age. They are, however, not to be
regarded as means of salvation. Matthew 28:19; Luke 22:19-20;
Ephesians 2:8-9
That the true
Church is composed of all such persons who through faith in Jesus
Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united
together in the body of Christ of which He is Head. Ephesians
2:16-22; I Corinthians 12:13; Colossians 1:18
Members of this
universal body are welcomed to membership in this local body,
“submitting themselves to one another in the fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:21
That Jesus Christ
is the Lord and Head of the Church, and that every local church has
the right under Christ to decide and govern its own affairs.
Colossians 1:18; Acts 13:1-4
In the personal
and premillennial and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and
that this “Blessed Hope” has a vital bearing on the
personal life and service of the believer. Matthew 24:1ff;
Revelation 19 and 20
In the bodily
resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness
and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting
punishment. Revelation 20:11-15
